Nice, Simple Machine Sold Through the Sears Catalog

The 1915 Rex Visible uses a 3-row, Qwerty, 28-key, frontstrike impact mechanism.

Originally developed as the Harris Visible type writer introduced in 1908 as a reliable, simple and sturdy typewriter, the machine was built to specifications issued by the Sears Roebuck company. It was to be a relatively inexpensive workhorse typewriter marketed through the Sears catalog for $39.80.

The Rex Visible #4 typewriter of 1915 was manufactured by the American Can Company in Chicago Illinois for $57.50, at a time when most major brands were sold for about $100. See the included advertisement reproduction in the related photos.

The Rex Visible includes a wider-than-normal 10.5” platen, a two-color ribbon shifter with stencil setting, a qwerty keyboard, a backspace key, right- and left-hand shift keys (for figures and capitals), a tab key, carriage release key and an easily removable platen.

A good deal of information about this machine came from the Will Davis typewriter collection at DavisTypewriters.blogspot.com.

This machine is in fair condition, has a new platen, but needs rust removal and a good cleaning. Currently the type bars do not work smoothly because the machine needs to be cleaned.
