The Underwood Just Keeps Getting Better

First manufactured in 1901, nearly 4 million of these iconic Underwood workhorse machines were sold until the model was discontinued in 1931.

This rugged machine is in excellent condition and an example of one of the best desktop typewriters ever built. For countless potential typewriter customers, the Underwood simply looked like a typewriter should look.

Four repositionable tabs are available. Two-color ribbons can be accommodated and a stencil setting is also provided for making mimeograph machine stencils where the ribbon is not engaged at all.

Using the typewriter stencil setting and specialized sheets of thin waxy paper, the type bars “cut” characters into the stencil, which was then stretched around an inked drum. As the mimeograph machine drum turned with the mounted stencil, sheets of paper were impressed against the stencil producing a clear inked image of what had been typed on the typewriter. This was an early form of today’s copy machines and a giant step forward in the mass production of documents.

The rubber feet on this machine have been replaced.

The round silver button on the front left of the machine is a margin release, allowing a few additional characters to be typed beyond the set margins.
