1970 Sears AdventureChildren’s Toy Pretending to Be an Olivetti Valentine
Made in the style of Olivetti’s classic Valentine, this very lightweight child’s typewriter is designed to fit children’ fingers. It is made almost entirely plastic and nylon parts. Even the keys and key levers are plastic, but the actual type characters are metal. The Sears Adventure machine includes many stamped metal parts such as the carriage return lever.
Only single line spacing is available. There are no margin settings. The ribbon automatically reverses, but there is no dual-color ribbon mechanism.
Operation of the machine is rough, making no pretense of precision operation.
Interestingly there are separate shift keys for caps and figures.
The plastic cover is an almost identical knockoff of the Olivetti Valentine’s case.
A “Young Students” brand typewriter with a mechanism similar to the Sears “Adventure” was offered on page 448 of the Sears 1970 Christmas catalog for $16.88 compete with carrying case.
